Dave Matthews Band saxophonist dies in L.A.
On June 30, we heard that LeRoi Moore, the saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band, was in the hospital following an ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Va. We thought that was too bad and wished him well. But it was more serious than we thought, because he has died from complications from injuries.
E! Online says the 46-year-old had suffered a punctured lung and broken ribs, and while the exact cause of death hasn’t been released, he had gone back to the hospital on July 17. He died at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in L.A., the city in which he had begun an "intensive physical rehabilitation program," according to the band.
DMB was at the Staples Center in L.A. Tuesday night, and Matthews informed the audience "our good friend LeRoi Moore" had died. "He gave up his ghost to heaven and we will miss him always."
Bela Fleck & the Flecktones sax man Jeff Coffin, who had been filling in for Moore since the accident, played DMB’s sax-friendly Proudest Monkey to wild applause. Moore had arranged many of DMB’s tunes, and could play bass, bariton, tenor, alto and soprano saxophone, plus flute, clarinet and even penny whistle, E! says.
